          Philipp Harth's Biography

German sculptor whose work focused on large animal subjects formed in wood, stone and bronze. His works are located in Mainz, Mannheim, Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf and the Grugapark Essen. He was a notable member of the Berlin Secession (German: Berliner Secession), an art association founded by Berlin artists in 1898 as an alternative to the conservative state-run Association of Berlin Artists.
After his apartment and studio were destroyed by bombs in 1941, his family was evacuated to Offenhausen. There, Harth was arrested by the Gestapo and put under police surveillance, because he had made disparaging remarks about the art policy of the “Third Reich” (Nazis). Since 1946 he lived in Bayrischzell, where he died on 25 December 1968, aged 83.
