          Peter Pringsheim's Biography

          German physicist.
          He studied the photoelectric phenomena, fluorescence and phosphorescence.
          Although was baptized, he was persecuted by Nazis due to his Jewish heritage. After the invasion of the German troops in Belgium Pringsheim was arrested in May 1940. With the help of high-ranking political figures (Pringsheim’s sister Katia Mann was the wife of Thomas Mann) he was released on 6 December 1940. His former colleague James Franck, now a professor at the University of Chicago , pleaded for him, and succeeded to find him a job at the University of California. employment.
          Franck arranged him a job at the Research Institute Argonne National Laboratory near Chicago. He worked there from 1947 to 1954 and resigned only from the age of 73.
          Pringsheim returned to Belgium, where he lived with his wife in Antwerp . In 1961 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Giessen.
          He died 20 November 1963.
