British rock singer-songwriter and guitarist who formed the blues group Fleetwood Mac with a debut on 12 August 1967. Fleetwood Mac was founded by Green, with drummer Mick Fleetwood, guitarist Jeremy Spencer and bassist John McVie completing the lineup for their self-titled 1968 debut album. The band soon signed to major labels and their LPs put them in the superstar class in England. Green had formerly played with Peter B’s Looners and with Shotgun Express.
As the founder of Fleetwood Mac, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. Green’s songs, such as “Albatross”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Oh Well”, “The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)” and “Man of the World”, appeared on singles charts, and several have been adapted by a variety of musicians.
When he left “Fleetwood” he recorded a solo album, The End of the Game. The pressures of fame contributed to a worsening mental decline in 1973 and in late 1976 until Green withdrew to a mental hospital on 27 January 1977 in order to recoup. He resurfaced in late 1979 with the solo album, In The Skies.
Green formed the Peter Green Splinter Group in the late 1990s, with the assistance of Nigel Watson and Cozy Powell. The Splinter Group released nine albums between 1997 and 2004. In May 2009 he was the subject of the BBC Four documentary, Peter Green: Man of the World.
Green married Jane Samuels in January 1978; the couple divorced in 1979. They had a daughter, Rosebud (born 1978). Green died in his sleep on 25 July 2020 at the age of 73 on Canvey Island, Essex, England.
