          Pedro Espinel Torres's Biography

          Peruvian composer best known for his piece El Rey de las Polkas. In 1925 he befriended the famous composer Felipe Pinglo Alva, and started learning the secrets of popular rhythms. Moved by the regrettable death of the composer on 13 May 1936, he composed his first work Murió el Maestro (“Death of the Maestro”), then came other waltzes. The National Radio prohibited transmission of his waltzes Fin de Bohemio (“End of the Bohemian”) and El Expósito (“Abandoned”) in 1939. He was elected as a councilor in the district of Rimac in 1963 and responsible for the inspection of civil registration, and he organized the first mass weddings to regularize the family situation of many couples. Suffering from diabetes, his legs were amputated. Despite this incident he continued to compose, mainly polkas, and eventually composed 300 works in this genre. He died in Lima on 8 November 1981 at age 73.
