Paul Pauley's Biography
French actor, comedian and singer who began his career as a cafe-concert singer making fun of his own obesity. He recorded six gramophone records in 1919. In 1923, he created the role of père Grenu in the operetta Ciboulette by Reynaldo Hahn. In 1928, he created the stage role of Régis de Castel-Bénac in Topaze by Marcel Pagnol and won over the critics. The writer Colette remarked after seeing one of his performances that “Paradoxically, considering his physique, he appeared as light as a hot air balloon” (“Paradoxalement à son physique, lorsqu’il joue, il est léger comme une montgolfière”).
In 1931, he imitated Lucienne Boyer and the audiences howled with laughter. In the same year, he recaptured the role he played on stage in Le Blanc et le Noir by Sacha Guitry, and the following year (1932), he again played the role of Régis de Castel-Bénac in the film version of Topaze, alongside Louis Jouvet. In other films directors typically made comic effect of his obesity.
He recorded a few discs at Polydor between 1931 and 1933. In 1936, he participated in one of the very first shows of French television in the company of the Tyrolean Esther Kiliz.
He died in Paris on 13 May 1938, aged 52.
