British theatrical actress with a formidable manner. Routledge won a Tony Award in June 1968 for “Darling of the Day” on the New York stage. She began her career as an assistant stage manager at the Liverpool Playhouse. Her credits include a few of Alan Bennett’s plays and she was the hilarious straight-talking overnight minor celebrity, Kitty, in Victoria Wood’s TV show.
