          Otto Greiß's Biography

          German architect and construction official whose works include the design of the water tower in Mönchengladbach (1907-1909).
          Otto Greiß was the son of the Frankfurt architectural painter Gustav Greiß (1825-1896), his older brother was the architect Eugen Greiß (1856-1925). He studied in Berlin from 1895 to 1897 and passed his preliminary examination, then at the Technical University of Stuttgart and the TH Darmstadt, where in 1901 he passed his first major exam in building. After military service in 1901-1902 he entered the Hessian civil service and passed his second major exam in 1905. He first worked in Mainz and Hamburg, and from 1907 to 1923 was Stadtbaurat in Mönchengladbach, and from 1911 also an associate of the city. In this role, he was responsible for the planning and execution of numerous urban buildings, such as the water tower.
          In 1927 he founded a studio for architecture, urban planning and construction consulting with offices in Mönchengladbach and Wanne-Eickel. After the war, he was once again briefly Stadtbaurat in Mönchengladbach. An urban development plan started by him remained unfinished due to his death on 4 November 1945 at the age of 69.
