Oswald Mathias Ungers's Human Design Chart
5/1 Emotional Manifesting GeneratorGerman architect and architectural theorist whose initials “OMU” stood in architectural circles and publications as a polarising “trademark” for the uncompromising nature of his architecture. He saw himself as committed to design principles that he derived from the past, developed further and sought to realise in his buildings beyond all fashions and schools as a contemporary expression of general human order.
He was professor at the Technical University of Berlin and Dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 1965-1967. In 1967 he became professor at the Cornell University in Ithaca (New York). He received professorships at Harvard University in Cambridge (1973), University of California in Los Angeles (1974-1975), Hochschule für angewandte Kund in Vienna (1979-1980) and at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1986-1990).
His most famous works are the “Hamburger Kunsthalle,” “Alfred-Wegener-Insitute” in Bremerhaven, “Wallraf-Richartz-Museum” in Cologne, “Villa Glashütte” in Utscheid and the “Contrescarpe-Center” in Bremen.
He was married to Liselotte Gabler. They had three children. He died from pneumonia on 30 September 2007 at age 81 in Cologne. His son, Simon Ungers, also became a famous architect.
