          Nelleke Noordervliet's Biography

          Dutch writer and columnist.
          She was born in the Rotterdam labour district Krooswijk, her father being a car mechanic, her mother a catholic housewife. She was the first of her family to attend the Catholic Lyceum Mara Virgo, studied Dutch letters in Leiden and Utrecht, where she graduated cum laude.
          She debuted late in 1987, after a career as desk editor at a scientific publisher, Dutch teacher and Labour politician in local politics. She married a physical chemist Noordervliet and had two daughters.
          Her debut “Tine of De dalen waar het leven woont” (Tine or the valleys of residence life, 1987) dealt with the tragic faith of first wife of Multatuli, Everdine Douwes Dekker-van Wijnbergen (1819 – 1874), called Tine in his letters.
          After that she wrote many novels, novellas, short stories, essays, drama, a narrative poem, history, and columns. At the universities of Leiden, Groningen, Delft, Berlin and Paris, she was a guest writer.
          Her work is characterized by a great interest in the past.
