Nancy Spero's Biography
American artist in figurative Expressionism. After she and her husband, artist Leon Golub, moved to Paris in 1959 for a five year sojourn and an association with European galleries and museums, Spero began a series of war paintings which were angry and furious. She found that the commercial galleries had no interest for them in New York and eventually she connected with the budding feminist art movement. She discovered that women artists were really analyzing the art scene and revealing how little power women had. She joined the A.I.R. Gallery, a women’s cooperative, in 1972.
In 1994 Spero and Golub’s work went on display as a joint retrospective, “Leon Golub and Nancy Spero: War and Memory,” at the American Center in Paris. Spero’s exhibition centerpiece is a ceiling painted mural of female figures on walls leading up to a rectangular skylight. The work, called “To the Revolution,” is a celebratory parade of mythical and historical female figures.
Spero met Leon Golub in 1946 at the Art Institute of Chicago. They married in December 1951 and have three sons, the last of whom was born in Paris, France. She died on October 18, 2009 in Manhattan of heart failure caused by infection and respiratory problems.
