Nancy Mitford's Biography
British writer, known for her witty novels about the English upper classes. Her works include “Pursuit of Love,” 1945, “Noblesse Oblige,” 1957 and “Frederick the Great,” 1970.
Born to a titled English family, Mitford was eldest of seven children born to the eccentric second baron of Redesdale and Sydney Bowles Mitford. (Her sister was Jessica Mitford, who achieved fame writing muckraking books on leading industries, such as “The American Way of Death.”)
Her life included an unhappy marriage, an entopic pregnancy that left her barren, and a deep love for French politician Gaston Palewski, who was head of de Gaulle’s cabinet in exile during World War II. Her first love was Hamish Erskine, who was homosexual and younger than she.
Devoted to France, she spent the latter part of her life in Paris, writing friends and family with letters that were later published in “Love from Nancy: The Letters of Nancy Mitford,” 1994.
She died 6/30/1973 of cancer in Versailles, France.
