          Mordicai Gerstein's Biography

          American artist, writer, and film director, best known for illustrating and writing children’s books. He illustrated the comic mystery fiction series Something Queer is Going On.
          Gerstein wanted to be an artist from the time he was a child. As he grew into young adulthood he painted, sculpted and was an animator for cartoons. In 1970 Elizabeth Levy invited him to illustrate one of her books and for over 30 years the two collaborated. He found success writing and illustrating his own books. In 1983 Arnold of the Ducks, his first book which he both wrote and illustrated, was published. Gerstein won several awards including a 2004 Caldecott.
          Gerstein directed four holiday specials for NBC TV in the late 1970s and early 1980s based on the Berenstain Bears book series, the most notable being The Berenstain Bears’ Christmas Tree, which premiered on 3 December 1979.
          Mordicai Gerstein died on 24 September 2019, aged 83.
