Long Lake near Union, South Carolina along with his brother Alexander Tyler Smith (born 5 August 1993). The crime shocked a nation and led to the arrest and murder conviction of the mother of the two baby boys, on 22 July 1995.
Susan Leigh Vaughan Smith was born on 26 September 1971 in Union, South Carolina. A deeply disturbed woman, she had driven her Mazda into 18-foot deep water of the lake with the boys strapped in their car seats in the back. She and David Smith were separated and she had recently been dumped by her lover, Tom Findlay. After the murders, she spent nine days telling lies and publicly mourning the missing boys, whom she said had been kidnapped. She broke on 3 November and confessed.
