Maximilian Wolf's Biography
German astronomer who applied photography to the search for asteroids and discovered 228 of them.
Wolf showed an early interest in astronomy; he was only 21 years old when he discovered a comet, now named for him.
In 1893 Wolf became director of the new Königstuhl Observatory and was appointed to an extraordinary professorship in astrophysics at Heidelberg; nine years later he was elected to the chair of astronomy at Heidelberg. Through his photographic studies he established the presence of dark clouds of interstellar matter in the Milky Way Galaxy, and he was the first to use the stereocomparator (a type of stereoscopic viewer), which greatly helps in the discovery and identification of variable or moving objects in celestial photographs. In 1906 he discovered Achilles, the first of the Trojan planets, two groups of asteroids that move around the Sun in Jupiter’s orbit.
He died 3 October 1932, Heidelberg
