          Maxime Laignel-Lavastine's Biography

          French psychiatrist interested in neuro-anatomy, neurology, criminology and psychiatry. He was also devoted to the study of the history of medicine. Laignel-Lavastine supported the initiative of his pupil, Isidore Simon when he founded the Society of History of Hebrew Medicine and he agreed to become honorary president.
          He obtained the Chair of History of Medicine in 1931 and then that of Mental Illnesses in 1939. His main and innovative work was his teaching at the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Law in Paris. He was also a member of the Medico-Psychological Society, the Graduate School of Anthropology and the International Society of Criminology. He was a member of the International Academy of the History of Science.
          He wrote a textbook on psychiatry and, together with V. Vanciu and Étienne De Greeff, published a book on criminology.
          He died in Paris on 5 September 1953, aged 77.
