          Maurice Nicloux's Biography

          French engineer, physician and biochemist, who developed methods of measuring the gases in biological fluids. He was interested in the formation of carboxyhemoglobin in the blood and carbon monoxide poisoning. He developed an extremely precise chemical method for the determination of the blood alcohol level, long a reference method. He studied the effect of anaesthetics (chloroform, ether, ethyl chloride, nitrous oxide) and lipolysis.
          He became one of the founders and first president of the Society of Biological Chemistry in 1914. During the Second World War, he was appointed director of the biological chemistry laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine in Marseille.
          He died on 5 January 1945 in Annecy, aged 71.
