          Maura Murray's Biography

American missing person and presumed dead, the young woman went missing on February 9, 2004, after crashing her new car into a snow bank on a rural highway in northern New Hampshire. The nursing school student and high school star athlete had attended West Point Military Academy, intending to become a chemical engineer, but, when she decided the Army wasn’t for her, she transferred to the nursing program at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. With good grades, a committed boyfriend, close friends and family, the reasons for her disappearance is baffling. On the day of her disappearance, however, she had withdrawn $280 from an ATM, packed some clothes, a stuffed toy monkey given to her by her boyfriend, her cell phone and its charger, and she had e-mailed her professors that she wouldn’t be in class all week because of a “family problem.” Although her destination was unknown, she was headed to New Hampshire, on the Vermont border, an area where she had frequently hiked with her father.
At about 7 that night, in Woodsville, N.H., after she lost control of her car and slammed into a snow bank, she told a witness that she did not need help. The witness, reporting that Murray was intoxicated, called police, but by the time they arrived, Murray had disappeared. Tracking dogs lost her scent near the accident and her footsteps trailed off; police speculate that she might have hitched a ride or been kidnapped. She had taken her backpack with her but left in the car a stuffed monkey as well as her favorite book, “Without Peril.” Two weeks after her disappearance, the FBI became involved in the search. As of mid-2004 she has not been found.
