          Maud Loty's Biography

French theatre and silent film actress, particularly known for her stage and screen roles in Colette’s plays. Her shows were very successful, making her one of the most prominent actresses of her generation. She performed in particular in pieces by Sacha Guitry and is considered a star of the Théâtre des Variétés.
She entered a convent in 1932, then returned to Paris, forgotten by her audience, she found herself without the slightest role. Eccentric and alcoholic, she continued her expensive life and ended her existence totally ruined. Expelled in March 1939 from her luxurious apartment in the Champs-Élysées and totally destitute, she tried to earn a living by being a fortune teller in Pigalle. She lived in an attic and gleaned fruit and vegetables from markets on rue Lepic in Paris for food, wearing an old leopard fur coat, a vestige of her past glory. A friend of the singer Fréhel, they were often seen together in the bistros of Pigalle. She died on 12 May 1976 at age 81 in Clamart.
