His father destroyed Rumeiland from Simon Vestdijk, as it was a pagan book. The pastor advised him to swim and do long distance to keep under control his sexual urges.
But the opposite would happen. The gymnasium stimulated his love for letters and the swimming pool his interest in the opposite sex. He became a controversial person (see references) in the Dutch world of letters. But his reviews of new literature for the TROS had great impact on the book sells. He did this for 21 years, having six hundred thousand listeners. On 22 December 2007 he had to leave.
