German Protestant theologian and left-liberal politician, considered one of the main representatives of cultural Protestantism. Rade founded and published the journal Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gemeindeblatt (Evangelical-Lutheran Congregation, 1886-1887) which was retitled under his editorship as Die Christliche Welt (Christian World, 1888-1889).
In 1889 Martin Rade married Dora Naumann (1868–1945), a sister of the left-liberal party leader Friedrich Naumann. Their son Gottfried (1891–1987) also became a theologian, but then worked full-time for the DDP in the constituencies of Hessen-Nassau and Dresden and emigrated to Switzerland in 1933, where he served as pastor for many years.
