          Martin F. Gaffney's Biography

American Marine Corp Chief Warrant Officer. He had a hippie life in the ’60s until he joined the Marines in 1975 at 26 as the oldest recruit in boot camp. Divorced from an unstable marriage, he met his future second wife, Mutsuko Kuniyoshi, while stationed in Okinawa.
Mutsuko lost their first baby in 1981. It was overdue and a large baby at 11 lbs; the navy doctors had refused to induce labor any earlier. When she received a blood transfusion, the blood was AIDS tainted.
They had a daughter born in 1983 and a son in 1985. The boy died at 13 months, and Mutsuko died in 1988. Gaffney sued the Federal Government for $3.8 million for infecting his family with AIDS. He won the suit and the money was paid on 10/21/1991 in trust for eight-year-old Maureene Emiko Gaffney. Martin died of AIDS four days later, on 10/25/1991.
