          Martha Coakley's Biography

          American lawyer and prosecutor, first female Attorney General for Massachusetts, elected in 2006.
          Coakley graduated with honors from Williams College ini 1975 and from Boston University Law School in 1979. She joined a private law practice immediately after graduation. In 1986 she joined the Middlesex County Attorney General’s office as an assistant district attorney. A year later she was invited to be a Special Attorney on cases of organized crime. A rising star, she served for some time working on cases of child abuse and children’s welfare cases.
          In 1998 she was elected Middlesex District Attorney. Her successful prosecution of high profile cases (including the Louise Woodward case), her tough stance on crime, her favorable media presence and her articulate and earnest communications skills earned her popular approval. In 2006 she ran a successful campaign for state Attorney General.
          She married John O’Connor in 2000.
          On December 8, 2009 she won a special election primary to be the Democratic Party nominee for Senator to take the place of Ted Kennedy who died earlier in the year.
