Marte Röling's Biography
Dutch fashion illustrator, designer, sculptor, artist and actor.
Marte was the second child of two artists: The graphical artist and professor Gerard “Gé” Gerard Victor Alphons Röling (16 Augustus 1904, Den Bosch – 11 May 1981, Terwolde) and the paintress Antonie Martina Adolphine “Tonny” Grolle (15 August 1909, Zaltbommel – 24 August 2006, Uithuizen), who married in 1932. Her uncle was the polemology professor B.V.A. Röling, the painter Matthijs Röling is a nephew.
At age 16 she visited the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where her father was a teacher. Her parents expected that she would marry, get children and would draw as a hobby, but Marte had other plans. At age 19 she had exhibitions in Europe and the United States (1959). She worked eight years for the the fashion page of the newspaper Het Parool. With editor Jeanne Roos, she visited fashion shows in Europe and made drawings in a kind of stenography of the newest clothes, as photographers and drawers were not allowed.
In 1965 she won the culture prize of Hilversum. She made large and colourful paintings and monuments, pop art like portraits of Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus in the eighties, films, designed record labels, stamps, theatre decorations and many more.
On 17 January 2010 Marte was knighted as “Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw ”
Personal
Marte was married to fluxus artist Hans Koetsier (12 June 1930, Utrecht- 30 Augustus 1991, Amsterdam) and the psychologist and performance artist Henk Jurriaans (21 November 1940 – 10 October 2005, Uithuizen). In 1969 she fell in love with Henk Jurriaans while married. After a divorce, she lived with her husband Jurriaans, and later with three other women in his to large studio farm at Oude-Dijk (old dike) 6a, 9981TK in Uithuizen. Also her mother spent her last twelve years here. After Jurriaans died of cancer, she made some 55 portraits of him, that were exhibited in museum De Fundatie (The Foundation) in Zwolle.
She liked travelling and visiting friends a lot once, but when painting she withdrew in the Uithuizen (Out Houses) studio for weeks.
