          Mario Monicelli's Biography

          Italian film director and screenwriter who had a modest debut as a co-director of a series of minor comedies. The son of a noted journalist, he began as a film critic and amateur filmmaker, winning an amateur prize at Venice in 1935 for a feature-length 16mm. From 1949-1953 he collaborated with Stefano Vanzina on eight minor comic films that starred Toto, which successfully blended social pathos with comedy. From 1953, working alone, he scored an international triumph with I soliti ignoti (Big Deal on Madonna Street) released in 1958.
          His numerous awards include an award at the Venice Film festival, Best Director prize at Berlin, 1957, another Best Director prize at Berlin in 1982, Golden Lion for Outstanding Achievements in 1991 and the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic in 1995.
          Hospitalized in Rome for prostate cancer, he jumped to his death on 29 November 2010. He was 95.
