          Marie Fletcher's Biography

          American ranch woman of the early settlement period of the southwest. A tiny, attractive woman, she raised citrus and cattle and baked the best cakes in Arizona.
          When she graduated college in Missouri in 1917, she went to visit Los Angeles, where she met and married a man who was abusive. She took their son and went to see kin in Phoenix. There she met and fell in love with Johnny Fletcher, a steam engineer for the Bartlett Land and Cattle Company. They married and moved into a small cottage with her piano.
          Marie bought a milk-strain cow for $112.50, the first of a herd that grew to 250 registered cattle, all named and as responsive to Marie’s kindness as pets.
          She raised a family, a son and daughter. A talented artist, she painted desert landscapes. John died in 1934 following the death of her son Lawrence of meningitis. Marie sold most of the land in 1977 to developers, becoming quite wealthy in her later years. Her daughter, Virginia, died in a fire 6/20/1987.
          Marie died at 99, 11/24/1993, Arizona.
