          Margaret Kropholler's Biography

          Dutch feminist and architect, the first female professional architect in the Netherlands.
          She was the daughter of the state agent Jacobus Kropholler (1850-1922) and the Scottish Margaret Bisset (1861 – 23 March 1943, Wassenaar). They married 29 April 1880 in Amsterdam and got very artistic children.
          She and her brother Alexander Jacobus “Co” Kropholler (26 July 1881 4 PM , Amsterdam – 17 May 1973, Wassenaar) became architects. Her brothers Alexander and Kees became musicians and Julie Louise became a drawing teacher.
          On 19 December 1936, she married in Amsterdam, the architect Jan Frederik “Frits” Staal (28 February 1879 5 PM, Amsterdam – 8 April 1940, Amsterdam), from whom she already got several noted children. Two of their sons also became Dutch architects: Arthur Staal (3 July 1907, Amsterdam – 5 December 1993, Amsterdam )and Georges Staal. Her son Fred Staal died during WW2 in the Dutch East Indies.
          She was not the biological mother of the well-known philosopher and writer of the book “Euclid and P??ini, Philosophy East and West, 1965” Johan Frederik (Frits) Staal (3 November 1930, Amsterdam – 19 February 2012, Chiang Mai). Frits Staal’s father was her mate Jan Frederik Staal, but his mother was Jewish and never returned back after her her deportation to German concentration camps in 1943. Frits Staal studied mathematics and natural sciences in Amsterdam and became professor of Philosophy in Amsterdam and professor of Philosophy and South & Southeast Asian Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
