          Marcel Dehalu's Biography

Belgian astronomer, collaborator with François Folie at the Observatory of Cointe, doctor of physical sciences and mathematics, and professor of topography at the University of Liège. He was interested in the earth’s magnetic field, and studied the mine compass. He participated in several cartographic missions in the Belgian Congo, notably the determination of the boundary with Uganda (1906) and, with British geodesists, the measurement of an equatorial arc of the 30th meridian (1908-1909). After 1909, he was in charge of the establishment of a general map of the mining concessions of the Campine basin (discovered on 1 August 1901 by the Louvain geologist André Dumont). He made the first photogrammetry tests in Belgium. In 1922, he succeeded Constantin Le Paige as director of the observatory. In 1923, he was appointed administrator-inspector at the University of Liège. He died on 15 June 1960, aged 86.
