          Marc Colombat's Biography

          French physician, specializing in voice and speech disorders, who coined the term ‘speech therapy’ to designate their correction. He is the inventor of the muthonome, a diction aid to keep pace.
          Interested in the physiology of phonatorial organs, he especially studied stuttering, and founded the Speech-Language Institute in 1830, intended to treat stuttering but also “all diseases of the voice”. He published various books on speech therapy, phonology, surgery and medicine.
          A Knight of the Legion of Honour, he died in Paris on 20 June 1851 at age 53, after a long illness that had deprived him of the use of speech.
