          Malcolm Lowry's Biography

English poet and novelist, best known for his 1947 novel Under the Volcano, which was voted No. 11 in the Modern Library 100 Best Novels list. The book tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, an alcoholic British consul in the small Mexican town of Quauhnahuac, on the Day of the Dead, 2 November 1938. The book takes its name from the two volcanoes that overshadow Quauhnahuac and the characters, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl.
Lowry died in a rented cottage in the village of Ripe, Sussex, on 26 June 1957.
