          Ludwig Pfau's Biography

German poet, journalist, and revolutionary, who was editor of the satirical magazine Der Eulenspiegeland and a member of the board of the Württemberg State Committee during the March Revolution in 1848.
Because of his political activities, he had to flee abroad after the failure of the March Revolution. From 1852 he lived in Paris, where he made a name for himself as a translator and art critic. Returning to Württemberg in 1863 following an amnesty, he was one of the founders of the People’s Party. Pfau also came into conflict with the Württemberg state due to his political attitudes in later years and had to serve several prison terms.
Some of his poetry has been used in the composition of Kunstlieder (or more popularly in English, Lieder). He died on 12 April 1894 at age 72 in Stuttgart.
