          Ludwig Medicus's Biography

German chemist and pharmacist who served as assistant to Adolph Strecker at the University of Würzburg. In his Habilitationsschrift of 1875, he derived the structures of the purins known at the time (uric acid, xanthine, guanine, hypoxanthin) as well as the purinal alkaloids caffeine and theobromine. These structures were derived from him only twenty years later after long discussions with Emil Fischer. Medicus died on 11 October 1915 in Würzburg.
