          Lucien Schnegg's Biography

French sculptor whose early work closely resembles that of Auguste Rodin, yet he later moved away from a very expressive style, and initiated a return to a classical aesthetic among a new generation of early 20th century sculptors.
His younger brother, Gaston Schnegg, also became a sculptor and painter. Lucien presented his first work, a portrait of Gaston, at the Salon des artistes français in 1887. In 1898, the two brothers wrote a letter to Auguste Rodin to support him against the opponents of his Monument to Balzac. From 1902, Lucien Schnegg worked as a practitioner for Rodin. At the same time, he gathered around him young sculptors in search of a new aesthetic, breaking away from Rodin’s expressionism. These sculptors, including Charles Despiau, Alfred Jean Halou, Jane Poupelet and Robert Wlérick are known as the “Bande à Schnegg”.
He died of typhoid fever on 22 December 1909 at age 45 in Paris.
