          Louis Rouffe's Biography

French mime artist, the successor to his teacher Charles Deburau (1829-1873). He spent most of his career at the Alcazar de Marseille, where pantomime, in decline in the rest of France, remained popular. For ten years, he had great success as Pierrot, sometimes wearing only white makeup. He was also director of the troupe, and teacher and director of his shows. In summer, his troupe performed in the cities of southern France, between Nice and Bordeaux.
He was the father of actress Alida Rouffe, made famous by her roles in Marcel Pagnol’s films. He died in Marseille of tuberculosis on 21 December 1885 at age 36.
