          Lothar Müthel's Biography

          German stage and film actor and director who appeared in Der Golem (The Golem, 1920), a German horror film by Carl Boese and Paul Wegener from 1920, playing the role of Junker Florian, and in another minor role in Fritz Lang’s Der müde Tod (The Tired Death, 1921).
          Müthel attended the acting school of Max Reinhardt, Schauspielschule, Berlin. Following the Anchluss of Austria to Nazi Germany, Müthel was appointed as director of the Burgtheater in Vienna. He held that position from 1939 until the fall of the Nazi regime in 1945. Under his directorship in 1943, a notoriously extreme production of The Merchant of Venice was staged at the Burgtheater, with Werner Krauss as Shylock.
          Lothar Müthel was married to the singer Marga Reuter. Müthel’s daughter Lola Müthel also became an actress. Müthel died in Frankfurt am Main on 4 September 1964 at age 68.
