Little Richard's Biography
American singer, songwriter, and musician, a pioneering rock legend, he was influential in popular music and culture for seven decades. Nicknamed “The Innovator”, “The Originator”, and “The Architect of Rock and Roll”, Little Richard was alternately a flamboyant musician and born-again gospel minister.
Released in November 1955, his single “Tutti Frutti” became an instant hit, reaching No. 2 on Billboard magazine’s Rhythm and Blues Best-Sellers chart and crossing over to the pop charts in both the United States and overseas in the United Kingdom.
His next hit single, “Long Tall Sally” (1956), hit number one on the R&B chart and number 13 on the Top 100 while reaching the top ten in Britain. Like “Tutti Frutti”, it sold over a million copies.
His debut album, Here’s Little Richard, was released in May 1957 and peaked at number thirteen on the Billboard Top LPs chart.
A master showman, Richard wore capes and suits studded with multi-colored precious stones and sequins, along with a Pompadour hairdo and pencil moustache.
He was famed for his frantic and furious performances with the lyrics shouted out gospel style. Erratic and unpredictable, in October 1957 he renounced music and joined the ministry but came back to rock and soul in 1964. In 1977 he was once again a gospel minister, renouncing the secular world in favor of gospel tours.
The third of 12 children, he had a large head in proportion to his body and his right leg was shorter than the left.
He married his only wife, Ernestine Harvin, on 12 July 1959 in California. They adopted a one-year-old boy, Danny Jones, and divorced in 1964.
On the morning of 9 May 2020, Little Richard died from bone cancer at the age of 87 in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
