          Lisa Segal's Biography

          Norwegian Jewish circus artist, ballet dancer, and survivor of the Holocaust. At the outbreak of the war in 1940 Lisa and her family, who were British citizens, had lived in Norway for several years.
          Segal was arrested on 15 January 1943 and deported to Hamburg on 16 February where she was put in the Hütten police prison, together with her mother and Kirsten Brunvoll. She was transferred to several consentration camps before she ended up in Vittel in France.
          In Vittel, American and British citizens were interned. Her mother died in hospital there. Segal was exchanged to Lisboa and came to England in August 1944 where she worked at the Norwegian High Command and got Norwegian citizenship.
          Three of her sisters died while interned. Her sisters Tonny and Miriam was Norwegian citizens and was deported as part of the Norwegian deportations of Jews during WW II. Her sister Sara went into hiding but was arrested and also deported. Her brother Leopold was freed from a camp in Austria in the spring of 1945.
