Léon Prunier's Biography
French pharmacist who made his career at the Ecole de Pharmacie in Paris, where he was appointed chair of “Chemical Pharmacy” in 1885. Prunier’s work focused on organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and analytical chemistry. A specialist in quercite – a sugar extracted from the acorn of oak – and unsaturated hydrocarbons from oils, he was the author of an encyclopedic work on alcohols and phenols (1885). He discovered that propylene was polymerized to a viscous liquid when treated with acetic acid.
A doctor of medicine (1875) and doctor of science (1878), Léon Prunier was a student of Berthelot. Prunier became director of the central pharmacy and inspector of pharmacies and hospices of Paris in 1897. He died on 12 August 1906, aged 64.
