          Leon Lhermitte's Biography

French artist, a painter and etcher noted for his landscapes, an exemplar of French realism. Lhermitte was a talented artist, widely admired by his peers, and a lifelong friend of Cazin.
His talent was obvious at an early age, and in 1863, he began studying at Petite Ecole in Paris under the tutelage of Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran who profoundly influenced him. In 1864, Lhermitte submitted his first entry to the Salon, beginning a long period during which he exhibited his work regularly. He won his first medal in 1874 with La Moisson (Musee de Carcassonne), and throughout his lifetime, he won many more honors including the Grand Prix at the Exhibition Universelle, 1889. He was a founding member of the Societe Nationale de Beaux-Arts.
Still working in the French rural tradition at the time of his death, his subject matter throughout the years rarely deviated from the peasants and rural surroundings of his youth. He died on 7/27/1925 in Paris, France.
