          Leo Samberger's Biography

          German painter.
          From 1880 to 1887, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1892 he was one of the founding members of the Munich Secession. Because of the bombing of Munich in the Second World War, he moved to Brail in 1943, but returned to Munich in 1948.
          Samberger has emerged primarily as a portrait painter. In the early days of his career he was under the influence of Franz Spranger , but later developed its own typical of his expression, which is characterized by a rough, little detailed dash. Samberger portrayed the Munich celebrity of his time, especially people from the artistic community. In addition to his oil paintings, a series of charcoal drawings Munich artist is significant. Best known are his portraits of Joseph Schülein , Father Rupert Mayer , Pope Benedict XV. and Pope Pius XI.
          He died 8 April 1949.
