          Kurt Blaum's Biography

          German politician who developed the so-called “Strasbourg system” of social welfare. He was Mayor of Hanau from 29 December 1921 to 31 May 1933. He belonged to the German Democratic Party, and on 1 April 1933 was put on leave because of his anti-Nazi attitude. On 28 December he retired. Blaum then worked as a business consultant.
          On 2 April 1945, he was employed by the American military government once again as Mayor of Hanau. On 4 July 1945, he was appointment as Acting Mayor of Frankfurt am Main. During his tenure, the beginning of the reconstruction, the security of supply of the population and the development of a functioning city administration were in the foreground. On 25 July 1946 he was defeated as a candidate in the mayoral election.
          He died on 26 November 1970 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe.
