King of the United Kingdom Edward VII's Biography

British monarch, he was King of the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Ireland) and Emperor of India from 22 January 1901 until his death in 1910. The Edwardian era, which covered Edward’s reign and was named after him, coincided with the start of a new century and heralded significant changes in technology and society, including steam turbine propulsion and the rise of socialism.
The second child and eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, he was known as ‘Bertie’ to the royal family throughout his life. He was Prince of Wales and heir apparent to the British throne for almost 60 years during the long reign of his mother, Queen Victoria. As King of the Empire, he was called “The Peacemaker.”
His coronation, originally scheduled for 24 June 1902 was postponed to a later date, 9 August 1902, as he had an appendectomy instead. His ten-year reign was noted for gaiety and national prosperity. Sociable, a flirt and a playboy, he married Princess Alexandra of Denmark on 10 March 1863 and they had six children. He died of heart failure on 6 May 1910 at 11:45 PM in London. His oldest living son, George, Prince of Wales, succeeded him as King George V.
