King of Sweden and Norway Karl XIII's Biography
Swedish royalty, the first king of the union of Sweden and Norway. The second son of King Adolf Fredrik of Sweden and Louisa Ulrika of Prussia (sister of Friedrich II of Prussia), he was the younger brother of King Gustav III and assumed the throne upon the death of his brother in 1809.
Though known as King Karl XIII in Sweden, he was actually the seventh Swedish king by that name, as Karl IX (reigned 1604–1611) had adopted his numeral after studying a fictitious history of Sweden.
Karl XIII married his cousin Hedwig Elizabeth Charlotte of Holstein-Gottorp (1759–1818) on 7 July 1774 in Stockholm. Both of their children died in infancy. With Augusta von Fersen, he had an extramarital son: Carl Löwenhielm (1772–1861). His adopted sons were Karl August, Crown Prince of Sweden and Karl XIV Johan of Sweden.
King Karl XIII died without a natural heir on 5 February 1818, succeeded by Karl XIV Johan.
