Ken Danby's Biography
Canadian artist, one of the world’s foremost contemporary realist painters. His sweeping landscapes and portraits of athletes that sometimes looked like photographs caught the public attention. “At the Crease,” completed in 1972, was perhaps his most famous painting. It is a powerful portrait of a masked hockey goalie slightly crouched in front of the net. The year of its release coincided with the year of the famously tense Canada-Soviet Union hockey games of the Summit Series.
Danby and his wife had three sons together.
Formerly on the Board of Directors of the Canada Council, also former Trustee of the National Gallery of Canada, his books include “Ken Danby,” “Danby: Images of Sport” and “Ken Danby: The New Decade.” In 2002 he received Canada’s highest civilian award, the Order of Canada. On September 22, 2007, he suffered a fatal heart attack while photographing autumn scenery in Algonquin Park in Northern Ontario. He was age 67 and was planning to use the photographs that day for his next painting.
