          Kate Millett's Biography

American writer, educator, artist, and radical feminist leader noted for lecturing and writing extensively on behalf of women’s liberation. After gaining honours at Oxford in 1958, she earned her Ph.D. at Columbia in 1970. She went to New York City to paint and sculpt while supporting herself as a bank clerk and kindergarten teacher.
Millett moved to Japan where she had her first one-woman show at the Mirami Gallery, 1961-1963. She operated on an international level between Tokyo and New York, designing furniture, painting and teaching English. Self-identified as bisexual, she was married to sculptor Fumio Yoshimura from 1965 to 1985 and had relationships with women, one of whom was the inspiration for her book Sita (1976).
She is best known for her book Sexual Politics (1970), which became the cornerstone of the modern feminist movement, followed by another novel in 1974 and her autobiography in 1977.
Millett died suddenly from cardiac arrest on 6 September 2017, aged 82, in Paris. She was survived by her wife Sophie Kier.
