          Karl von Piloty's Biography

          German painter, noted for his historical subjects, and recognised as the foremost representative of the realistic school in Germany. He was from a noted family, the son of lithographer Ferdinand Piloty.
          His picture, Seni at the Dead Body of Wallenstein (1855), soon gained for the young painter a membership in the Munich Academy, where he succeeded Karl Schorn (his brother-in-law) as Professor. He was also noted for a number of mural paintings for the royal palace in Munich.
          Piloty was appointed keeper of the Munich Academy in 1874, and later, was ennobled by the King of Bavaria.
          He was a successful teacher, and among his more famous pupils were Hans Makart, Franz von Lenbach, Franz Defregger, Gabriel von Max, Georgios Jakobides, and Eduard von Grützner.
          He died on 21 July 1886 at age 59 in Munich, Germany.
