          Karl von Basedow's Biography

          German physician most famous for reporting the symptoms of what could later be dubbed Graves-Basedow disease, now technically known as exophthalmic goiter.
          Basedow studied Medicine at the University of Halle, and trained in Paris for two years. In 1822, he settled in Merseburg, a small town near Halle/Leipzig, where he practised as a general physician. He was exceptionally observant and worked skillfully in many branches of Medicine, frequently publishing his observations and post-mortem findings on various diseases. His historical contribution to thyroidology appeared in the distinguished medical journal of the time Heilkunde fuer die Gesamte Medizin on 28 March 1840.
          He died in Merseburg on 11 April 1854 after contracting spotted fever from a corpse he was dissecting.
