          Karl Saldow's Biography

          German cyclist who belonged to the van guard of German racing before and after the First World War. In 1910 he won Rund um Berlin and came third at Berlin–Cottbus–Berlin.
          Saldow started in 22 six-day races in Germany, of which he won eight. He won six races together with Willy Lorenz. He won the six-day race in his hometown Berlin four times as a local hero.
          Saldow was four times German champion of the upright. After retiring from active cycling in 1928, he became a schrittmacher. In 1934, he led Dortmund’s Erich Metze to the world pro championship.
          Karl Saldow lost his entire fortune due to the Second World War. In cycling he was one of the top earners for many years, in the 1919 season alone he earned cash profits of 120,000 marks. On 31 May 1951 he took his own life at age 61.
