          Karl Haußmann's Biography

German “markscheider” (mining engineer-surveyor), geomagneticist and university lecturer, remembered as the surveyor of the geomagnetic field in southern Germany, particularly in the Nördlinger Ries in 1904 and in the Steinheimer Becken in 1932.
Known to adapt the training of students to the changing requirements of the mining industry, he wanted to set up an institute for applied geophysics in Aachen in 1905, but this failed due to a lack of money. In order to achieve a certain degree of research in this field, he developed a program that could be implemented by means of other institutes, including surveying the geomagnetic field, especially mining, seismic observations for assessing the effects of earthquakes and traffic shocks, measurement of the elastic constants of rocks, etc., which led to the publication of maps of the magnetic elements in Germany in 1912.
He died in Schwäbisch Gmünd on 24 January 1940, aged 79.
