Karl Grünberg's Biography
German communist writer and journalist, one of the authors whose works were thrown into the flames during the Nazi book burning on 10 May 1933.
Karl Grünberg joined the SPD (Socialist Party) in 1911, moved to the USPD in 1919 and finally to the KPD (Communist Party) in 1920. He was a co-founder of the Federation of proletarian-revolutionary writers (1928-1935). After 1933, Grünberg took part in the communist resistance against National Socialism and was temporarily imprisoned in the Sonnenburg concentration camp. Since 1936 he worked as a chemical engineer at Schering AG in Berlin. From 1943 to 1945 he was employed by the air-raid police in Essen and Berlin.
In the last days of April 1945 he founded the “Volkskomitee Berlin-Pankow” with others. On 2 May 1945, this committee wrote the first appeal to the residents of the Berlin-Pankow district. Immediately after the war ended, Karl Grünberg took over the reorganization of the Pankow judicial system for a few months. For several years he was the editor of the SMAD newspaper Tägliche Rundschau. Then he again worked as a freelance writer.
Karl Grünberg died on 1 February 1972 in Berlin-Grünau at age 80.
