          Jules Delhaize's Biography

          Belgian businessman, the fourth child of Édouard Delhaize and Joséphine Marsigny, he married Jeanne Vieujant, the widow of his brother Louis. When Delhaize Frères et Ciese transformed into an S.A. in 1907, he was appointed, along with his cousin Louis Vieujant, managing director of the new company. He became chairman of the board in 1913 and, after the war, he was managing director (1919-1921) and chairman of the board (1921-1923 and 1925-1927) alternating with Louis Vieujant. His commercial activities are especially known through his historical writings. He published a six-volume study, French domination in Belgium at the end of the 18th century and at the beginning of the 19th century, published between 1908 and 1912 and variously appreciated by critics. In the aftermath of the war, he devoted a new book, Punishment without crimes, crimes without punishment, to German atrocities in Belgium. He died on 22 January 1928 in Brussels at age 55.
